Excavation Project in Kerman’s Historical Sites Continues

News Category: Prehistory

 17 June 2004

The excavation project of historical sites in Kerman Province, already led to the discovery of several metalwork artifacts dating back 5,000 years ago, will continue till the end of the Iranian year (March 20).

The southern province of Kerman is among crucial archaeological areas in Iran, always attracting researchers due to its unique climate and geography. Archaeological projects are mainly focused on the western part of Iran though, thus ignoring Kerman. Since last year, a special project has been launched to explore the historical sites dotted in the province.

“So far over 500 sites have been discovered and documented in Jiroft, Baft, Sirjan, among others, though the bulk of the research in Bam and some parts of Jiroft, Kahnooj, Shahdad, and Shahr Babak is still underway,” said Fakoor Pas, director of the Cultural Heritage organization in Kerman Province.
